Meet on free software demands policy changes

HYDERABAD: The National Convention on Free Software held at University of Hyderabad called up for major changes in the current Government policies in order to speed up dissemination of knowledge in the Indian economy. The convention called for greater adoption of Free Software within the Government, usage of non-proprietary software and data formats and for software developed with Government funding to be made free, according to a statement issued here on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, M.Vidyasagar of TCS said his company was firmly committed to open source and free software. P.Madhu, MP, said the Free Software movement was gaining a lot of momentum across the world and it was a movement for freedom, independence and self-reliance.

Prabir Purkayastha of Delhi Science Forum and G. Nagarjuna, Chairman of the Free Software Foundation, also spoke.
