CHENNAI : The four mini-flyovers proposed in the city are expected to be ready by mid-2008. The Chennai Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Government would work together to ensure that work is completed on time, Town Planning and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday.

The project is expected to ease congestion at the junctions of Turnbulls Road and Chamiers Road, North Usman Road and Kodambakkam High Road, G.N. Chetty Road and Thirumalai Road and Usman Road and Duraisamy Road with two-way flyovers.

Mr. Stalin inspected the sites for the proposed flyovers and visited the Ramakrishna Mission School grounds--the venue of the upcoming inaugural ceremony. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate work on the flyovers in the city in another ten days.

Work is scheduled to be completed in 15 months, he said. Gammon India Limited was awarded the contract by the Tamil Nadu Government for Rs. 40.80 crore. The estimate has been revised since to Rs. 58.52 crore.

Chennai Corporation Mayor M. Subramaniam and Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni accompanied him on his tour of inspection.

    Turnkey contract

Gammon India has been awarded the contract on a Design, Engineering, Production and Construction (DEPC - Turnkey) basis. All four flyovers come under Zones VII and VIII in south Chennai. The flyover to clear congestion at the Usman Road and Duraisamy Road junction would take traffic off the Usman Road between the Bata showroom and Sarojini Road on the southern side and before Murugesan Road on the northern side. The estimated cost of the flyover is Rs. 19.80 crore. For the North Usman Road and Kodambakkam High Road intersection, a flyover costing about Rs. 9.72 crore would be built along the North Usman Road.

Traffic would ease off the North Usman Road immediately after the post office near the Habibullah Road on the southern side and near the signal off Lady Madhavan Road on the southern side.

To prevent congestion at the G.N. Chetty Road and Thirumalai Road junction, a mini-flyover estimated at Rs. 16.5 crore would come up along G.N. Chetty Road.

Vehicles can cross the Dr. Nair Road and Thirumalai Road junction easily by taking the flyover near the Apollo Clinic opposite North Crescent Road on one end or off Jeeva Park near the Rajamannar Street at the other.

The flyover to clear traffic at the Chamiers Road and Turnbulls Road junction is estimated at Rs. 12.50 crore. It would take traffic off the Chamiers Road near the Park Sheraton Hotel on one end or near Aavin, beyond the Nandanam Extension XI Street and Chamiers Road 4th Lane, at the other.
