MUSIC TO THE EAR: Operating ham radio is catching on.
HYDERABAD: Hamfest-2007, the first international amateur radio event organised at Lakshadweep recently, managed to activate radio connectivity in the four islands. The event could establish 1.10 lakh contacts in every nook and corner of the world, according to S. Suri, founder-chairman, National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR). He said the March issue of Ham News had a specific word of appreciation for the institute with participants learning new skills from foreign hams who had experience in operating ham stations in difficult terrains around the world. Hamfest highlighted the importance of the islands that would give a big fillip to tourism activity. The event suggested a national registry of updated data that could be shared by the Ministries of Communications, Defence and Home Affairs and even private telecom agencies. It felt that much-needed employable skills could be honed through amateur radio operation to benefit students and the unemployed. It recommended the need to develop a professionally competent nationwide network of amateur radio users.
