Technology has revolutionised education, says VC

COIMBATORE: Education should be made technology-based, K.Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka, said here on Sunday.

Delivering the graduation day address at the Kumaraguru College of Technology, he said technology had revolutionised education.

Textbooks had gone online and the concept of e-learning was gaining popularity. He cited the example of his own university, which had a wi-fi campus, where even examinations were conducted online.

Students were equipped with laptops and they had access to information, which was stored digitally. With web-based educational content, they could access course material from their homes through the Internet, he added.

Technical education determined the socio-economic development of a nation, and there was a need for high quality technical education to produce skilled manpower, he said. He urged the universities and educational institutions in the country to make use of the `edusat' facility and network amongst themselves. About 12,000 students from 125 engineering colleges were addressed through the facility on the VTU campus.

Mr. Reddy also stressed the need for industry - institute interaction. Higher education should take into the account the changes taking place in the working environment and modify their curriculum accordingly. Faculty development programmes should be held regularly and institutions should tie up with industry majors to facilitate an exchange of ideas between the industry and the student community.

It would also pave the way for research and development, he said. Research culture should be brought into classrooms. He also said that training in institutions should be placement oriented. Chairman of Sakthi Group, N.Mahalingam presided over the function. Around 670 students received their graduation certificates.
