NEW DELHI: In a unique initiative, Jan Pratinidhi Manch (JPM), a group of voluntary organisations, have decided to select "people's representatives" from each ward to contest the forthcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections. With the help of its constituents group, JPM will organise meeting at each ward where people will select candidates. Today , the Manch leaders will hold a meeting of the member of wards committee of Govindpuri falling in South Delhi to select "people's candidate" for their area. The process will be repeated in all the municipal wards. The JPM member organisations include Lok Raj Sangathan, Nagrik Shasan, Bharat Punarnirman Dal, Hind Naujawan Ekta Sabha, Vyavastha Parivartan Party, Rangabhoomi Natya Samooh, Delhi Shrmaik Sangathan, Khatra Kendra, Nagrik Ekta Manch, Samata Sangharsha Party and Women Political Forum. According to a statement issued by the JPM, the aim behind the process was to enable the residents of Delhi to participate directly in governance through their own selected candidates so that problems of residents and their solutions could be brought to the forefront in a more effective manner. Through this process, JPM aims to challenge the imposition of the narrow partisan agendas of the established political parties.
Oath
The candidates selected by JPM would have to abide by certain selection criteria set by the Manch and also take a solemn oath that if elected, they will agree to resign from their post if their performance was found unsatisfactory by the residents committee of their wards, it added.
