Road turned into dumping yard Sir, The 14th Cross street, opposite Nandini Theatre towards Chord Road, has turned into a garbage dumping yard. Often, owing to the limited load of the garbage clearance trucks, the left over garbage is set on fire. Smoke emanating from this from morning till night causes respiratory problems, particularly in children and senior citizens, besides spreading a foul odour and causing pollution. Apart from being a health hazard, stray dogs and cattle roam the area. This is serious in view of recent incidents of stray dogs killing children. Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike health inspectors and people's representative have not shown interest in solving this problem. Will the authorities concerned take action against those found guilty of dereliction of duty and clear the garbage from this residential area? S.K. Rajendran, Bangalore Improve rail connectivity Sir, We are happy with the slashing of AC fares and the decision not to increase sleeper class fares in the Railway Budget. We appreciate the Railway Minister for his concern towards middle and lower class people who depend solely on the Railways, the "Lifeline of India", for travel. It is commendable that the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Maveli Express has been made a daily service from the existing tri-weekly service. The introduction of the Garib Rath train to Mumbai from Thiruvananthapuram via Mangalore and coastal towns of Karnataka is another good move. But as far as rail connectivity to Bangalore is concerned there leaves a lot to be desired. During the last two years, train Nos 6515/16 and 6515/17 to Bangalore have only remained on paper despite gauge conversion. The proposal for a Shimoga-Bangalore Intercity Express has also not been taken up. I request the authorities concerned to take steps to throw open the Mangalore-Hassan line to passenger services. Varun Shrinivas, Bangalore Help mentally challenged Sir, This is in reference to the article "Helping them realise their dreams" in your daily on February 26. It is heartening to note the committed work by the Association of People with Disability to bring physically challenged persons on a par with others by helping them develop their skills. It is a great achievement for the institute that the students who successfully complete the courses are assisted in securing jobs. Can the institute come forward to do something for mentally challenged individuals? A number of such persons are good at computers, especially data entry and web designing. This will help them and their families gain some social and economic recognition and make their lives more meaningful. With committed staff of institutions such as the association and help from the Government, this is possible. As parents of such a child, we have failed to secure admission to any computer course as no institute seems to have the time or inclination to teach such children. Ms. Ali, Bangalore Clear footpath Sir, The authorities after cleaning a drain on 9th Cross, 1st Phase, J.P. Nagar, have failed to replace the stone slabs on the drain. There is no place to walk as the slabs are piled up on the footpath. This has been the condition for several months. I urge the authorities concerned to take steps to ensure that the footpath is cleared at the earliest. N. Raju, Bangalore Readers can email their letters to letters.bangalore@ thehindu.co.in
