Bangalore: "Mata Amritanandamayi Devi is known for her good deeds worldwide. The Mata Amritanandamayi Math has been in the forefront of the tsunami relief efforts in the country," said R. Ashok, Minister for Health. He was speaking at the public reception organised to welcome the "hugging saint" as Mata Amritanandamayi is also known as, here on Sunday. The Minister spoke about the good work taken up by the math, which included rehabilitation projects and providing vocational training to the youth. Governor T.N. Chaturvedi's message was read out on the occasion. In his message, the Governor welcomed her to Bangalore. In his message, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said that the design of the housing projects taken up by the math in Mandya, Hassan and Mysore districts would be incorporated in the Government's housing schemes. On the occasion, Mata Amritanandamayi gave away sewing machines to 10 women who lost their spouses. She also distributed cheques to the elderly, as part of the math's old age pension scheme. The math plans to give pension to at least one lakh people in the country. She also released a souvenir to commemorate the occasion. Satsang, bhajans and darshans were held after the function. Devotees participated in various pujas, including "Sani dosha nivarana puja" and "Lalitha Sahasra namarchana".
