Rasipuram: The district administration began the survey work on the 5.5 km stretch in the reserve forest area in order to obtain permission from the Centre to complete the formation of an alternative road to Kolli Hills from Mullukurichi, near here, on Monday. A press release here has said that tribals living in the villages in the hills and tourists found it hard to travel through the existing road, which has 70 hairpin bends. As a result, the district administration had planned to lay an alternative road from Mullukurichi in Rasipuram to Kolli Hills. It had laid a road between Mullukurichi-Moolakurichi and Poosani Kuzhi-Nariankadu in Kolli Hills. But it could not lay the road in the stretch between Moolakurichi and Poosani Kuzhi, as it fell under the reserve forests. The district administration and State government requested the Union government to permit laying the road in the stretch. Collector G. Sundaramurthi said that the survey world be completed in a month. Based on the survey report, an estimate and a proposal would be submitted to the Centre to obtain its permission, he said. Villagers in Kolli Hills were paying huge sum as freight to bring their agriculture produces to the markets in the plains. If the alternative road was completed transportation of goods would become easier. The socio-economic condition of tribal people would improve.
