Nagapattinam: The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund has provided state-of-the-art equipment to a number of primary health centres for maternity and child care, said N.S. Iyer, Assistant Project Officer (Health and Nutrition), UNICEF field office, Chennai, here on Saturday. Dr. Iyer reviewed on Friday the working of the phototherapy unit, radiant warmer and incubators donated by the UNICEF to the Government Hospital and PHCs in Nagapattinam district. He said the equipment would not only ensure quality care services to antenatal and post-natal mothers and infants but also reduce the infant mortality rate. The organisation had donated critical care equipment and audio-visual systems to 43 PHCs and generators to 11 main PHCs. Dr. (Capt) G. Venkatachalam, former Joint Director of Health Services and consultant of UNICEF, said medical staff would be trained in using the equipment. Dr. Iyer complimented medical officers of Thirupoondi and Kodiakkarai on fully utilising the equipment donated by the UNICEF.
