Letters to the Editor
The killing of Sunil Kumar Mahato, JMM MP representing Jamshedpur, by Naxalites shows the extent to which the ultras call the shots and pose a law and order problem in Jharkhand. They have established a reign of terror and run parallel administrations in many regions. The incident is a timely warning to the Centre and the States to take the necessary steps to enforce law and order. Development should be given top priority if the support base of Naxalites is to be weakened.

The cold-blooded killing of Mahato and three others deserves to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It once again brings to the fore the urgent need to curb the Naxalite menace that is fast spreading. The Naxalites no longer appear to be fighting for the people. They indulge in heinous killings to serve their selfish ends.
J. Anantha Padmanabhan,

Whenever such incidents take place, those at the helm condemn them with a promise that steps will be taken to contain the Naxal menace. But nothing substantial is done. No useful purpose will be served by condemnation unless it is accompanied by measures to crack down on the Naxalites.
H.P. Murali,
