HASSAN: Hassan municipality launched the second phase of the operation to catch and cull stray dogs on Sunday. The dogs were caught with the help of a thin long iron string and then given the lethal injection. The municipality began the culling of stray dogs in Chennapatna and Hosakere area here on Monday. A total of 150 dogs were killed in the operation.

Nearly 3,500 dog bites are recorded in Hassan every year. In the first phase, the municipality caught 1,500 stray dogs and killed them.

Manure for trees

According to officials, these dead dogs are used as manure. Farmers who grow coconut trees bury the dead dogs under the trees. Last time when the municipality killed stray dogs, farmers bought them at a price ranging from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100.

Senior official from Hassan municipality told The Hindu that this time 1,500 stray dogs would be caught. However, farmers are not coming forward to buy them.

Hence, these dogs are being loaded in a tractor and taken to a forest 8 km from Hassan where they are buried en masse in a trench.
