FAMILY IN AGONY: Union Ministers of State S.P. Jaiswal and Subodh Kant Sahay consoling the bereaved wife of JMM MP Sunil Mahato, at her house in Jamshedpur on Monday.
Jamshedpur: The Centre will consider in a day or two the Jharkhand Government's recommendation for a CBI probe into the killing of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Sunil Kumar Mahato, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said on Monday. There should be a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the killing on Sunday. "Whatever the State Government asks for will be considered." Its request for additional paramilitary forces would be looked into." The Minister dismissed allegations of misuse of Central funds provided for modernisation of the State police. He, however, cautioned that misuse, if found, would not be tolerated. Union Minister of State for Food Processing Subodh Kant Sahay, who accompanied Mr. Jaiswal, however, said funds meant for combating extremist activities and police modernisation were not properly utilised by the State Government. Praising Andhra Pradesh's efforts to control the naxalite menace through joint operations, Mr. Jaiswal suggested that Jharkhand follow a similar strategy. The Centre was prepared to provide all help to the State to ensure that such incidents did not take place at any cost, he said.
Naxal menace
Mr. Sahay said half-hearted measures to curb the naxal menace would not yield the desired results. The merciless killing of Mr. Mahato has sent out an important signal for officials and the State Government to put their act together and combat naxalism.
