Braille book audio library a boon to visually-challenged students

NELLORE: It all started as a small experiment exactly one year back with an aim to help visually-challenged students across the State on the academic front.

The unique Braille book audio library here has now become a boon to many of them to prepare for competitive examinations such as Education Common Entrance Test (Edcet), District Selection Committee (DSC) and other entrance tests, besides the regular academic examinations from Class I to Post Graduation (PG) level. The distinctive library, which was set up on March 5 last year by Sight -- a trust for the people -- is now trying to supply personality development cassettes with a view to motivating visually-challenged students.

The trust neither collects donations from individuals nor funds from any organisation. It is being run by a group of some 60 people who contribute a monthly contribution of Rs. 100 to run the library. It has been supplying audio cassettes to visually-challenged students free of cost. "Inspired by the noble cause, Akashavani, Vijayawada has even come forward to broadcast the recorded lessons to help the students," Sight secretary G. Malyadri told The Hindu on Monday.

Self-reliant

Outlining the objectives of the trust, Mr. Malyadri said the move was aimed at helping them become self-reliant. "People usually ill-treat the visually-challenged and even families consider them a burden. On the other hand, a self-dependant earning person is viewed with respect," said the trust's secretary, who married a visually-challenged teacher K. Sree Ganga.

"We have even plans to convert all audio cassettes into CDs to make them more relevant. Besides, our trust members will also record valuable information pertaining to science and technology, in particular computer science."
