Girijans seek separate mandal

Kakinada: Volunteers of Andhra Pradesh Girijana Sangham and District Vyavasaya Coolie Sangham staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Monday demanding creation of a separate girijan mandal with Pedamallapuram as its headquarters.

They also demanded inclusion of all girijan villages situated in the sub plan areas of the agency in the fifth schedule so that justice could be rendered to them in all spheres. Though the girijans living in the seven mandals were recognised as girijans, they alleged that officials were refusing to sanction girijan certificates to them.

Rechukatla Simhachalam, president of AP girijana sangham, Chanti Babu, district secretary, K. Rajendra from Srujana organisation and Madireddi Rama from Samatha organisation addressed demonstrators. Later, they called on the Collector and presented a memorandum.

Inspected

The district Collector M. Subrahmanyam has made a surprise visit of inter examination centres in Andalamma college, Gandhi centenary junior college and some other centres in the city here on Monday and inspected the arrangements made and how the students are taking the exam.

Speaking to newsmen on the occasion, he said exams started under foolproof arrangements and a total of 798796 students including Inter first and second years were appearing. As against 98 examination centres arranged, he said, 13 were in Kakinada city alone.

Collector has said that a special control was set up in the Intermediate Board regional superintendent's office to receive complaints from the students from anywhere regarding the written exams.

Proxy voters warned

East Godavari Collector and Returning Officer for MLC elections M Subrahmanyam has said stern action will be taken against those who try to indulge in proxy voting in the MLC elections.

Inaugurating the first round of election training programme to Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers of Kakinada division here n Monday, he said proxy voters would be prosecuted and if they were employees they would be summarily dismissed from service.
