State budget on March 23

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu budget for 2007-2008 will be presented on March 23, according to Assembly Secretary M. Selvaraj. In a release here on Monday, he said the budget would be presented in the House at 9.30 a.m. On March 22, the Assembly will meet and pass condolence resolutions. — Special Correspondent

2 sentenced to life for female infanticide

Dharmapuri: The Dharmapuri Fast Track Court on Monday sentenced a 29-year-old man and his mother to life imprisonment for female infanticide.

According to prosecution, C. Selvaraj of Chinnagummanur near Palacode and his mother Sundarammal fed the one-month old with paddy seeds on March 3, 2003. The baby died in Dharmapuri Government Hospital three days later.

Judge D. Jayachandranalso slapped a fine of Rs.1,000 each on the duo. He instructed the Maarandahalli police to initiate action against the complainant Selvi (24), wife of Selvaraj, and her mother Rajammal, who turned hostile during proceedings. — Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

ERODE: One person was killed and two others were injured in a road accident on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Bharathy Subramaniam, a police constable attached to the Madurai City Police Commissionerate. Banumathy (50), wife of Chidambarasamy, Inspector General of Police, Intelligence, and her relative Rajeswari (45) were admitted to hospital here. According to the police their car collided with a petrol tanker on the National Highways near SIPCOT, Perundurai. Bharathy, who was driving, was crushed to death. — Staff Reporter

First semester results on websites

CHENNAI: R esults of the first semester PG and B.Sc. examinations of colleges affiliated to Anna University, held in January 2007, were published on Monday.

Students can access the results on the following websites: www.annauniv.edu, www.chennaionline.com, www.collegechanakya.com, www.indiaresults.com, www.squarebrothers.com, www.dinamalar.com, www.online

Scholarship offered to students

CHENNAI: Sushil Hari International Residential School, Kelambakkam, plans to offer total-care scholarship to students getting admitted to VI-XII grades for academic year 2007-08. It will be based on their performance in a scholastic student search test to be conducted in March/April at Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. It is open to students from all over the country. The total scholarship amount will be Rs.50 lakh.

Sent to camp

PUDUKOTTAI : A Sri Lankan fisherman, Sagaya Devadas (47), who reached Meemisal, has been sent to the Mandapam camp on Monday. The police said that the fisherman lost his way while fishing in the waters and landed at Meemisal in the wee hours of Monday.

Local holiday

PUDUKOTTAI : It will be a local holiday for all government departments and educational institutions in the district on March 12 on account of the temple car festival of the Sri Muthumariamman Temple at Tiruvappur near here. In a press release issued here on Monday, the District Collector, S. J. Chiru, said that the District Treasury and Sub-treasuries would function with a skeletal staff.

March 24 would be a compensatory working day.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 81.17 feet against its full level of 120 feet .

The inflow was 636 cusecs and discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Students discharged

TIRUNELVELI: Except 20 students of the hostel attached to Mary Arden Middle School, Palayamkottai, all others, who were admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Sunday with symptoms of food poisoning, were discharged on Sunday night and Monday.

Awareness drive

TIRUNELVELI: The Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Ashok Kumar Das, distributed pamphlets to two-wheeler riders on Monday stressing the need of helmets.

He told reporters that the campaign would be intensified in the days to come. He also flagged off a bike rally.

Derailment

TIRUNELVELI: A minor derailment was reported at Tirunelveli Railway Junction on Monday when wheels of an oil tanker slipped from the tracks.

However, the tanker was put on track immediately and traffic was not affected, sources said. - Staff Reporter

Grievances meeting

ERODE: District Revenue Officer V. Santha and DRDA Project Officer R. Rajashree received more than 300 petitions at the grievances meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday. The DRO distributed welfare measures worth Rs. 2 lakh. Two members of Varadappampalayam Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank, M.S. Subramaniam and Periyasamy, submitted a memorandum stating that the bank's special officer and secretary had misused more than Rs. 23 lakh fund. They appealed to the Collector to take action.

Job fair

ERODE: A job fair was conducted at Sree Amman Arts and Science College here on Saturday and Sunday in which more than 5,000 students attended. Correspondent T. Jayalakshmi inaugurated the fair and managing director T. Balakumar presided. About 20 companies including Sifi-I way, Cromasoft, Bangalore, Sri Kumaran Thanga Maligai, Erode, Hindustan Lever Ltd, TVS, Mahindra and Mahindra took part in the fair. - Staff Reporter
