Latest equipment for Bangalore traffic police

Staff Reporter

It will be used to check drunken driving

BANGALORE: The Bangalore traffic police are now equipped with the latest Korean-made pre-test breathalysers that would help them detect whether motorists have consumed alcohol.

The motorist is expected to blow into a given slot in the alcoholmeter, which will display a reading. The hand-held device looks like a mobile phone and is the first of its kind to be used by the Bangalore police.

Bangalore North Round Table-25 on Monday donated to the police 12 such devices and 200 reflective jackets. Chairperson Subbu Jois handed them over to the Commissioner of Police Neelam Achuta Rao at function held near the Queen's Statue in Cubbon Park.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) M. Abdullah Saleem told The Hindu that the East and West traffic divisions would get six meters each.

The police would procure more such devices after ascertaining their effectiveness, Mr. Achuta Rao said in his address.
