New facility to test software

IBM centre of excellence inaugurated

MADURAI: The International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation Rational Centre of Excellence established at the K.L.N. College of Engineering near here would serve as a common facility to test any software application, besides software development, said R. Dhamodaran, Director, Software Group, IBM India, on Monday.

Inaugurating the centre, he said that the Rational software was one of the widely acknowledged standard tools used by many multinational companies. Given the economical vibrancy of the country, the centre would focus on enhancing software development skills of students, he said.

The "context-sensitive" tool happened to be the market leader in software development platform and learning the product in depth would increase the chances of employability.

The best performing students from the institution would have the privilege of working with some of the bright talents in the field of software development at IBM research facilities, Mr. Dhamodaran said.

Ajay Mittal, Director, Relationship Sales, Lenovo India, said that the education industry had enormous potential in the fast growing personal computer segment. Within three years, the PC requirement in this sector would increase by three times, he added.

Presiding over the function, K.N.K. Ganesh, president of the college, said that the centre would become the regional hub of standard and technology in service oriented architecture. Software professionals and students from other colleges would be permitted to use this centre, he said.

T.K. Mahendra Babu, Dean, Academic, Research and Development, said that the centre had been established with the purpose of research and development for students, staff and IT industry.

Manojit Mujumdar, Country Manager, IBM Academic Initiative, K.N.K. Karthik, vice-president of the college, S.V.S. Shivnath, Secretary, PL. Meyappan, Director, N. Lakshmi Narasimhan, Professor and Head of Department of Computer Science Engineering, took part.
