Rs.4 cr. for development of infrastructure facilities

Staff Reporter

Railway Workshop's bid to improve working conditions

TIRUCHI: The Goldenrock Railway Workshop has embarked on the task of improving infrastructure facilities in various shops located within the workshop at a cost of Rs.4 crore with a view to improving the working condition, its Chief Workshop Manager S. Rangarajan said on Monday.

Speaking at the National Safety Week celebrations held at the organisation here, Mr. Rangarajan said the workshop had also initiated pollution control measures by establishing effluent treatment plants within the organisation to address the environmental concerns.

With diverse material handling capacity, the workshop had been accepting new works and taken efforts to improve safety systems at work places.

The workshop had created a history in safety performance by recording only 14 accidents during 2006, he said while recalling that the accidents stood around 360 per year during the 1990s.

A number of safety procedures were established for various trades and training was tailor made to their requirements.

Exhorting the staff to create a safety culture with teamwork and dedication, Mr. Rangarajan said accidents hits the bottom line of an organisation containing its growth besides earning bad reputation.

Poor skill, lack of knowledge, absence of motivation could cause accidents in work centres.

The awards and shields received by the workshop over the years was proof of the sustained efforts taken by the organisation in practicing safety management techniques and by inducting new material handling systems.

With guidance from the Factory Inspectorate Officers, the workshop was working towards achieving `zero accident', he said.

The Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer (Production) N.A. Ismail listed the various safety promotional activities carried out in the workshop.

The workshop, he said, had bagged State level safety awards from the Government for the past few years. As part of the function, a safety pledge was administered to the workshop staff.

A safety poster campaign was organised on the occasion.
