Search for excellence

Imparting life-skills to students hardly gets the importance it deserves in the existing scheme of things in school education where examination has become the only norm for judging excellence.

The selection of three best school teachers from primary, middle and high schools in the district for the Innovative Teacher Awards instituted by the Ajith Balakrishnan Foundation of Ajith Balakrishnan, chairman of the Rediff.com, deviated from the trodden path of finding the best teachers for the awards, each carrying Rs.1 lakh as prize money.

A four-member judging committee comprising education experts sat for two days evaluating each of the 54 entries on a 10 to 30 grade point scale to find excellence and innovation.

The three teachers whose names were announced at the award ceremony last week found themselves enveloped by huge applause from the audience largely comprising schoolteachers. The video presentation of their teaching methods in classrooms showed their innovative methods of transacting with the students.

The organisers of the award did not hide their immense satisfaction that the award ceremony drove home the importance of innovation among the teaching community.

The ceremony left a feeling that there would be more entries for the awards next year.
