Relishing coconut water

V. S. Achuthanandan

The launch of processed and chilled tender coconut under the brand name `Coconectar,' in Kozhikode on Saturday was the right occasion for Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to exhort the people of the State about the use of coconut and its value added products.

"Coconut trees are grown more than paddy in the State. Save the coconut to save Kerala," he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan also said that agitations against beverages manufactured by multi-national companies have made people go for tender coconut water. Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran spoke about the medicinal properties of tender coconut water. "Drinking tender coconut water daily can prevent kidney disorders." However, he said, the State was losing out to neighbouring States as well as countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Philippines in coconut production. Modern technology should be utilised to enhance value addition, he said.
