Ceaseless flow of protests over Cauvery

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: It has been a month of protests in Mysore ever since the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal delivered its final award on February 5 on sharing of water among the riparian sites.

K.R. Circle in the heart of the city has become the focal point and not a day passes here without at least half a dozen protests to draw the attention of the authorities to the growing public disenchantment.

And Tuesday marked the first month of non-stop protests, perhaps a record of sorts in the State if not in the country.

Novel protest

The protests here were not always the conventional procession and slogan chanting.

The organisers introduced an element of novelty which was obvious in the presence of folk artistes showcasing their talent to attract public attention. On one occasion, activists wearing masks of Gods took to the streets giving the impression that Gods have descended from heaven to get a glimpse of the goings-on on earth.

If folk artistes enter the fray, can theatre artistes be far behind ? Or for that matter photographers and beauticians?

Bullock cart owners, lorry owners, hotel owners, medical practioners, and students staged protests. Godmen too joined the fray and so did their innumerable devotees.

At the last count, over 200 processions have been taken out in the city in the last 30 days.

Momentum

The organisers say that the momentum of the protests will not abate. And hence, a temporary shamiana erected for agitations has now become a permanent feature at K.R. Circle.
