Tatas unveil `Elegante'

Showcase concept car at Geneva Auto Show

  • Larger than existing sedan, Indigo
  • Tata Motors also unveils new pick-up

SCALING UP: Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons, with the new Tata Elegante, a concept car which Tata Motors unveiled on Tuesday at the Geneva Motor Show 2007.

GENEVA: With an eye on moving up to the bigger segment, Tata Motors, has unveiled its concept car `Elegante', a vehicle larger than its existing sedan, Indigo.

"The concept car that we are showcasing here will probably meet the design parameters of our new models which will go into production from next year and the next to follow," Tata Group Chairman, Ratan Tata, said at the Auto Show here. While the new models based on this concept were expected to fill the company's portfolio in the bigger segment, Mr. Tata said the new sedans could be in the Indigo series.

Elegante has been conceptualised to incorporate four-cylinder transverse petrol and diesel engines from 1.4 litre to 2 litres and a compact V6 petrol power unit. The diesel version has common rail direct injection (CRDi) turbo engines and the capability to comply with Euro V emission norms.

The future cars based out of `Elegante' can be launched in the Indian market shortly as the company is pushing hard on making concepts into products. "We are focusing on production rather than making mere concepts. Models based out of Elegante will be out on the roads soon,'' Tata Motors Managing Director, Ravi Kant, told PTI.

The company also unveiled its new pick-up vehicle, which could be launched in the Indian market in the next two to three months, Mr. Kant said.

The pick-up truck will have three diesel engine variants starting from 90 hp to 140 hp and also in two-wheel and four-wheel drive versions. It will be launched in India and followed by other markets like South Africa, Europe and West Asia. — PTI
