Autorickshaw drivers take out rally

Special Correspondent

Seek reduction in fuel prices, vehicle insurance premium

Puducherry: Autorickshaw drivers and other workers affiliated to the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) took out a procession here on Tuesday in support of their charter of demands.

Raising slogans, they went through the Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, the Mission Street and the Beach Road.

At the end of the rally they presented a memorandum to Transport Department authorities at the Secretariat.

Among those who addressed them were T. Murugan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), S. Sivakumar of the CITU and G. Srinivasan, secretary of the Puducherry Region Auto Drivers and Owners Union.

They urged the Centre to ensure that vehicle insurance premium rates levied by the general insurance companies were brought down. They wanted fuel prices to be reduced and prices of essential commodities kept under check. They sought Rs. 10-crore grant for the Puducherry State Welfare Society for workers of the unorganised sector and distribution of red colour ration cards to all autorickshaw workers. Autorickshaw spareparts should be sold through cooperative institutions, they said. Roads linking the housing colonies with main roads such as Krishna Nagar Road, Ayyanar Koil Street, Thendral Nagar and Brindavanam should be properly maintained.

Welfare board sought

The Society created for workers of the unorganised sector should be converted into a welfare board, they said, demanding that the members of the society be provided total healthcare when they crossed the age of 60.
