RAISING DEMANDS: Members of the Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees staging a demonstration in Chennai on Tuesday. Photo: M. Vedhan
CHENNAI: Contract workers owing allegiance to the Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees (COTEE) on Tuesday staged a demonstration near the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board head office here, demanding regularisation of the services of over 23,000 workers and extension of provident fund and pension benefits to them. COTEE president S. Pancharathnam, who led the demonstration, told The Hindu that the decision to regularise the services of the contract workers as helpers rested with the Government. The Board Chairman had confirmed this during the talks he held with the union on July 2. Hence, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should intervene and find a solution. As of now, there were 23,405 vacancies for the post of helpers and 17,000 vacancies of supervisory post in the Board. Unless the helper vacancies were filled, the vacancies of higher posts could not be filled. The COTEE criticised the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government for toeing the line of the AIADMK Government on extension of PF benefits to the contract workers who had served for 10-25 years.
