Ortho alumni seek better infrastructure facilities

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The Calicut Ortho Alumni Association has appealed to the Government to provide better infrastructure in the Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College, Kozhikode, so that more number of patients from the lower economic strata could be provided specialised care.

Better infrastructure will be an added advantage, as experts and facilities needed for joint replacement surgeries are available in the medical college.

Besides, it is the only hospital in the Government sector conducting anterior and posterior correction of scoliosis.

Trauma and athroscopic surgeries are also conducted here.

The plea was made by the sixth summer meeting and continuing medical education programme and hands-on workshop on basic surgical techniques in arthoplasty held here on March 4 by the Ortho Alumni Association jointly with the Prof. P.K. Surendran Memorial Education Foundation.

Ayisha Guharaj, former Director, Medical Education, inaugurated the programme.

Surgeries

Discussions, in which experts from the State and outside participated, focussed on joint replacement surgeries and state-of-the-art techniques in the field of arthroplasty.

It was pointed out that the Department of Orthopaedics here had been providing advanced joint replacement surgery facility to patients from the lower economic strata at a nominal cost for the last 12 years.

The joint replant surgery costs around Rs.1 lakh in a private hospital and it is done for Rs.10,000 (Indian implant) and Rs.28,000 (foreign implant) in the medical college.

Similarly, knee and elbow replacement are performed for Rs.20,000 (Indian implant) Rs. 55,000 (foreign implant) and Rs.25,000 (Indian), 40,000 (foreign) respectively.
