Bangalore: The Government plans to start pre-university colleges in 67 taluk centres from the coming financial year, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said.

Speaking after unveiling the statue of former justice the late Hombe Gowda at the Hombe Gowda High School in Wilson Garden on Tuesday, the Chief Minister listed out various schemes being implemented by the Government to bring education within the reach of the poor. The Government was working out a scheme to open colleges in all new extensions of Bangalore.

High allocation

It had made a huge budgetary allocation to improve the buildings of colleges such as the Maharani's College in Bangalore and the Maharaja's College in Mysore, he said.

Describing the late Hombe Gowda, who started the educational institution in 1951, as "not only a judge but an epitome of humanism", Mr. Kumaraswamy said examples of people like him could go a long way in cleansing the corrupt system.

Responding to the demand of the Hombe Gowda Educational Institutions, he promised to extend the lease period of the land on which the school stood. The programme was attended by the former Vice-Chancellor and writer D. Javare Gowda, the former justice A.J. Sadashiva, the former Chief Justice S. Rajendra Babu, vice-president of the educational institutions K.N. Subba Reddy, president of the institution H. Sharath Chandra and so on.
