Veeramani hails decision on CET

CHENNAI: Dravida Kazhagam president K. Veeramani on Tuesday congratulated Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Education Minister K. Ponmudy for scrapping the common entrance test for admission to professional colleges.

In a statement here, Mr. Veeramani said his party was opposing CET right from its date of introduction, as "it was disadvantageous to rural students." The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, after coming to power, introduced a legislation abolishing CET and also got the President's assent.

The Government had announced that it would be notified in the gazette soon. He warned the Government that attempts would be made by "vested interests" to "sabotage" the decision. The Government should file a caveat in the Supreme Court to protect the Act and take steps to implement the decision in the coming academic year itself. — Special Correspondent

Special train to Ahmedabad

CHENNAI: A special train will be operated from Chennai Central to Ahmedabad on March 10 on the route of the Navjivan Express, to clear extra rush.

Train No.0656 will leave Chennai Central at 10.15 a.m. and reach Ahmedabad at 9.30 p.m. the next day. The composition will be, 12 sleeper class, 3 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. It will stop at Gudur, Nellore, Vijayawada, Warangal, Balharsah, Wardha, Badnera, Akola, Bhusaval, Jalgaon, Amalnor, Nandurbar, Surat and Vadodara.

Reservation will begin on Wednesday, according to a railway release. — Special Correspondent

Six centres for training priests

MADURAI: Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments KR. Periakaruppan on Monday announced that six centres to train people of all religions for becoming priests would be opened in the State by the first week of April .

Two centres in Chennai and Srirangam in Tiruchi would train priests for Vaishnavite temples and the remaining four at Thiruvannamalai, Madurai, Tiruchendur and Palani, for Saivite temples. Each could train up to 40 students who would be given a monthly stipend of Rs. 500. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had ordered the provision of basic amenities for the trainees, the Minister said. Those in the 14-24 age group who had cleared standard VIII would be eligible for admission, according to an official release. — Staff Reporter

Three killed in two road accidents

MADURAI: Three men were killed in two road accidents here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, R. Mokkaisamy (22) and S. Krishnan (24) of Paraipatti were coming here on a motorcycle when a State-owned bus knocked them down on Ring Road. The duo died on the spot.

In another accident, M. Muthuraj (25) of Sellur, a salesman in a private firm, was knocked down by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus on Melur Road. He suffered grievous head injuries and died on the spot. — Staff Reporter

Special buses

TIRUCHI : The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will operate 50 special buses from various parts of Tiruchi and Perambalur districts to Samayapuram on March 11 and 12 for the annual Poochorithal festival at the Samayapuram temple.

The special buses will be operated from Tiruchi city, Thuraiyur, Musiri and Perambalur town, according to a press release.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 81.06 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 636 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

Nine get life term

Tuticorin: The Principal Session Judge, Gokul Das, on Monday sentenced nine persons to life imprisonment, in connection with a murder that took place in the district on August 19, 2002. Ponnupandian (50), along with eight others, murdered Sankara Lakshman (42) and Muthukrishnan (49) at Kayathar owing to enmity. — Staff Reporter

Kerosene, rice seized

ERODE: The Tiruchengode police arrested a woman and seized 400 litres of kerosene and 45 quintals of rice meant for supply under the public distribution system. According to officials, based on a complaint, a team led by tahsildar R. Kadirvel conducted a raid on a house at Tiruchengode on Tuesday and found 4,500 kg of rice and 400 litres of kerosene kept concealed.

The officials arrested Vasanthy (30).

The officials with the help of the police broke open the house of Maragatham and seized 150 litres of kerosene.

A search is on for Margatham.

ERODE: On behalf of Syndicate Bank, Erode, a customers' meet was conducted recently. Erode municipal chairman K. Kumar Murugesh wanted the bank to advance liberally for education loan. He also asked borrowers to repay their loan arrears properly.

ERODE: There will be no power supply in the following areas on March 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. owing to maintenance works in the Kangeyam and Rasathavalasu sub-station: Kangeyam, Goundempalayam, Kadaiyur, Uthiyur, Aarathozhuvu, Nalroad, Sivanmalai, Pazhayakottai, Nathakadaiyur, Vattamalai, Padiyandipalayam, Keeranure, Olapalayam, Aalambady, Arachalure, Kasturibagram, Rasathavalasu, Muthur, Vellakoil, Dasanaickkenpatty, Kamiliampatty, Puduppai, Mettupalayam, Kurukkathi, Pachapalayam, Chennipalayam and Pappini villages. - Staff Reporter

Last date for photographing

ERODE: The last date for taking photographs for the Elector's Photo Identity Card will be March 10, said Collector T. Udahychandran in a release on Tuesday.

Officials deployed for taking photographs would visit every house. If the voter was not there, his/her passport size photograph could be given to the officials.
