Brisk movement of samba paddy from Nagapattinam district

Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) is quickly moving the samba paddy procured from the Cauvery delta region in Nagapattinam district to various parts of the State by rail and road.

Most of the paddy is being loaded from Tiruthuraipoondi, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai railway stations.

Collector of Tenkasi S. Jawahar said on Tuesday that the TNCSC had so far procured 2.4 lakh tonnes through its 214 direct purchase centres in the district against the crop season target of 3 lakh tonnes.

The average daily arrival of paddy to the DPCs had come down to 3,500 tonnes.

Nearly 2.35 lakh tonnes, constituting 99 per cent of the total procurement, had been sent to various parts of the State.

The TNCSC is offering Rs. 650 a quintal for Grade A variety and Rs. 620 a quintal for common variety paddy. This includes an incentive of Rs. 40 a quintal for rice with moisture content up to 17 per cent.

Target

According to P. Moorthy, Senior Regional Manager of the TNCSC, Nagapattinam, farmers who had excess stock were selling them at the DPCs.

The Corporation hoped to achieve its target by the month-end.

Barring a few hundred acres, the harvest of samba and thaladi crops is over in the district.

The Collector said most of the farmers had achieved good yield during the current samba season. An average of six tonnes a hectare was achieved.

Samba was raised on the normal area of 1.03 lakh hectares and thaladi on 31,000 hectares as second crop in the kuruvai area this year.
