SALEM: The State Election Commission is contemplating recommending to the Government the `Maharashtra model' of having only single-member wards, to eliminate the use of ballot papers and boxes in local body polls. "This will enable us to introduce, in a phased manner, electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the panchayat polls," said State Election Commissioner (SEC) D. Chandrasekaran here on Tuesday. He was talking to reporters after attending a review meeting with district officials. Explaining practical difficulties in introducing EVMs at present, Mr. Chandrasekaran said many panchayat unions and district panchayats had "multi-member wards," making it difficult for the Commission to use the machines.
