MADURAI: The Government should consider a new alignment for the Sethusamudram ship channel without disturbing Adam's Bridge, State Bharatiya Janata Party president L. Ganesan demanded here on Tuesday. There was a need to preserve heritage sites, and it was not proper to damage the ancient bridge. The BJP would take out three rallies in the last week of March from Tiruvadanai, Vilathikulam and Madurai to protest against the "damage" to the bridge. These would culminate at Ramanathapuram, and would be followed up with a dharna in front of the Sethusamudram project office at Rameswaram.
Sri Lanka issue
Expressing concern over the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka, Mr. Ganesan said that "India should perform its duty," to prevent "China and Pakistan from gaining a toehold in the island nation."
Cauvery award
Referring to the demand for notifying the Cauvery tribunal award, he said that when it was not clear, it was only proper to file a review petition. The Chief Minister's stand on notifying the award was "right." There could not be a demand for notification when the award was "not satisfactory." Mr. Ganesan said the frequent shifting of the Madurai Collector would demoralise officials and erode people's faith in democracy.
