Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Hospet observed a bandh on Tuesday to protest against the failure of the Railways to provide facilities in the region. The response to the bandh call, given by the Hospet unit of Bellary District Railway Action Committee, was good.

Representatives of various organisations, who supported the bandh, detained the Amaravati Express for nearly ten minutes at the Hospet Railway Station to register their protest against the Railways. They said the region had been fetching over Rs. 1,500 crore as freight revenue for the Railways and had contributed by way of tourist sites such as Hampi.

Earlier, they took out a procession that passed through the main roads of the city before reaching the tahasildar's office where they submitted a memorandum.

Almost all shops and business establishments, hotels, restaurants, cinema theatres, educational institutions and banks remained closed. Buses were off the roads causing lot of inconvenience to the public. Introduction of the Hospet-Bangalore passenger train, more number of bogies to Hampi express train, day train facilities between Hospet and Raichur and Guntakal Hubli were among the 19 demands put forth by the protesters.
