KOTTAYAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has wrested the administration of the Erattupetta grama panchayat from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) following elections to the posts of president and vice-president. The elections were held under tight police security to the 16-member council.
Political tussle
The political tussle in the grama panchayat had attracted media attention when two members of the LDF coalition withdrew support and forced a no-confidence motion in February. This was followed by high drama, including an alleged abduction. However, in the no-confidence motion moved on February 3, the LDF lost power. Tuesday's elections were the follow up of the no-confidence motion. The LDF had nine members in the council. However, they lost control when the two members, Suhara Abdulkhader (PDP) and P.A. Naushad (NCP) crossed floor and joined the UDF. On Tuesday's elections, the PDP member was elected president and the NCP man, vice-president. As per Tuesday's tally the LDF has seven members Kerala Congress (S) has four and CPI(M) has three. The UDF has nine. This includes six members of the IUML, one member each from the Congress, PDP and NCP.
