Jana plans urban police districts

Special Correspondent

Guntur, Warangal, Kurnool, Tirupati and Rajahmundry might qualify

HYDERABAD: Home Minister K. Jana Reddy has said efforts are on by the Government to create urban police districts for Guntur, Warangal, Tirupati, Kurnool and Rajahmundry, each headed by a commissioner, to tackle the increasing law and order and traffic problems.

Replying to a short-notice question tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday by D. Manikya Varaprasada Rao (Congress) who demanded the facility for Guntur, the Minister said only those cities whose population was 10 lakhs and above, could be converted into urban police districts as per the CrPC rules. Mr. Reddy said the Government, however, was considering the facility for Guntur, Warangal, Kurnool, Tirupati and Rajahmundry in spite of their population being around 7 lakhs, in view of several factors, including increase in crime rate.
