Rayadurgam Congress men submit resignations

Special Correspondent

`Neglect' of DCC chief for Council poll nomination flayed

  • P. Venugopal Reddy elected thrice to the Assembly
  • Protesters request Ministers to support them

ANANTAPUR: The elected representatives of Congress triggered a political turmoil in Rayadurgam constituency of Anantapur district on Tuesday by tendering their resignations. They were resenting the high command's decision to turn down the plea for nomination of DCC president P. Venugopal Reddy to the Legislative Council.

Rayadurgam Municipal Chairman Upendar Reddy, Vice-Chairman Pakkirappa, 29 councillors of the party, five mandal presidents, four ZPTC members, 47 MPTCs, 69 sarpanches, 10 watershed committee presidents, 14 PACS presidents and the agriculture market yard chairman were among those who put in their papers and faxed them to APCC chief K. Kesava Rao.

    `Unfair decision'

They termed the decision of the party high command as `unfair' in neglecting Mr. Venugopal Reddy who was elected to the Assembly from Rayadurgam three times and served the Congress for three decades.

Mr. Upendar Reddy and others told reporters that they welcomed the nomination of Laxmi Devi and Tippe Swamy to the council from the district.

But in the same breath, the party should have honoured the sentiment of its workers by naming Mr. Venugopal Reddy too.

They urged Ministers from the district to emulate them by resigning from their posts to rally their support for the DCC president.

Mr. Venugopal Reddy enjoys clout in Rayadurgam, Kanekal, Bommanahal, D.Herehal and Gummagatta mandals of the constituency.

Senior leaders refused to react to the mass resignations immediately.
