Showcasing the best of theatre

Theatre may have regaled people for generations but it is yet to receive sufficient corporate backing in India. To bring the corporate world closer to theatre, the Mahindra Group instituted the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) last year.

Designed to showcase the best of theatre, the META ceremony will be held in the Capital this coming Saturday as a perfect climax to the Mahindra Theatre Festival that got under way here on Monday and is on up to this Friday.

V. Arumugham's play "The Mirage" deals with the mystery of the universe and the existential problems of man and society and will be staged at Shri Ram Centre on Wednesday. The journey of two Brahmin widows in the post-Independence era is the theme of "Apeksha" that will be staged at Kamani Auditorium the same day.

"Numbers In The Dark" produced by The Company Theatre of Mumbai will be staged at Shri Ram Centre on Thursday. The play deals with the concept of a young Indian adult torn between the 21st Century and the country's 5,000-year-old history.

Tracing the growth of a modern city through its various phases of development is "Cotton 56, Polyester 84". It will be staged at Kamani Auditorium on Thursday. Marathi play "Tu" focuses on the lives of different individuals and will be staged at Shri Ram Centre on Friday. Manav Kaul's play "Bali Aur Shambhu" that shows the unique spirit of two characters towards life will be staged at Kamani Auditorium the same day. -- Madhur Tankha
