Special Correspondent

Punjab National Bank to provide loans

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government would provide opportunities to about 5,000 youth for seeking employment abroad during the next two years, Finance Minister Birender Singh told media persons here on Tuesday.

An agreement had been reached with Punjab National Bank for providing loans to youth for pursuing their higher studies, he said after giving letters of contract to 13 persons who had been provided employment abroad. Mr. Birender Singh said that the budget of the Overseas Placement Bureau Assistance Society would be increased from Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 1.5 crores.

He disclosed that the Haryana Government had written letters to 16 embassies but none had responded. So it was decided to make the Society more professional by appointing consultants and this had yielded good results. Soon 111 youth would be sent abroad as jobs had been facilitated for them.

He reiterated that the agenda of the Society was to save youth from the clutches of fake travel agents and provide them ample opportunities of employment abroad.

Replying to a question on Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's statement about scrapping of Section 5 of the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, Mr. Birender Singh said that by doing so Mr. Badal would not only attract provisions of Section 356 of the Constitution but also violate its federal structure.

He reiterated that the matter of abrogation of the water treaty by the then Punjab Government was already sub judice as the matter was before the Supreme Court. He said it was for the first time that the Centre had intervened soon after the Punjab Chief Minister issued the "statement''.
