CHANDIGARH: The Indian National Lok Dal on Tuesday demanded that the work of construction of the remaining portion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal in Punjab territory be resumed immediately and the Punjab Termination of Agreements Bill, 2004, passed by the erstwhile Amarinder Singh Government in Punjab be scrapped completely. Addressing a press conference in Hisar, former Chief Minister and INLD supremo Om Parkash Chautala said that so far as the SYL Canal imbroglio was concerned, the Supreme Court had already decided the case in favour of Haryana by directing the Central Government to get the construction completed "within due time frame''. He asserted that the SYL Canal issue was not pending in any court and there was no "hindrance'' before the Centre to implement the directions of the Supreme Court regarding its completion. He criticised Congress leaders for not raising the demand for early completion of the SYL Canal at the Navyug Rally in Sirsa on February 25 where UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was the chief guest. Apparently stung by criticism from Haryana Congress leaders in the past two days for his proximity to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Mr. Chautala rather accused the Congress Governments at the Centre, Haryana and Punjab for not making any efforts to get the Canal constructed over the years. "It is only after the Congress has lost in the Punjab elections that Haryana Congress leaders have started issuing public statements on the matter,'' he added.
