CHANDIGARH: The new Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance Government in Punjab on Tuesday appointed senior IAS officer Ramesh Inder Singh as the State Chief Secretary. Mr. Singh has been appointed in place of K. R. Lakhanpal, who has been designated Chairman of the VAT Commission relieving B. R. Bajaj, Vice-Chairman of the Commission, of additional charge, officials said here. Mr. Singh, an officer of the 1974 batch, is expected to take charge here on Wednesday after he is relieved from Delhi where he was on deputation with the Centre so far. He was Mr. Badal's Principal Secretary when he was Chief Minister from 1997 to 2002. After taking over as Chief Minister, Mr. Badal had announced that Mr. Singh and senior IPS officer N. P. S. Aulakh, presently Additional Director-General of Police in the Border Security Force, would take over as Chief Secretary and Director-General of Punjab Police, respectively. A 1977-batch IAS officer, S. S. Brar, presently posted as a Joint Secretary at the Centre, is expected to be appointed as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, officials said. - PTI.
