`Government has a responsibility to safeguard the interests of the people'
BANGALORE: Karnataka is ready for talks with the Tamil Nadu Government on sharing Cauvery waters to ensure justice to farmers of the State, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Tuesday. Speaking to presspersons here, he said the State's team of advocates comprising Fali S. Nariman, Mohan Kataraki and Advocate-General Uday Holla held a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday and discussed various options before the State.
Responsibility
The Chief Minister said that the Government had a responsibility to safeguard the interests of the people. It would not make a mistake by accepting the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The tribunal has awarded 419 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water to Tamil Nadu and 270 tmcft to Karnataka. Mr. Kumaraswamy urged the Tamil Nadu Government to show its commitment to holding talks to resolve the dispute. Political parties should also back the Government in its intention to hold negotiations with the neighbouring State, he said. The Government would try its best to secure more than the 270 tmcft of water awarded to the State. There was a view that the Government was not making efforts to get a fair deal for the State.
Consultations
The Government, MPs from the State and legal experts were consulting one another and working towards bringing about a consensus on the matter, he said.
