KOZHIKODE: A dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kozhikode taluk on Tuesday, following clashes between students at the Government Law College at Vellimadukunnu here the previous morning, was near total.

Ten students were injured in the clashes involving members of the Kerala Students' Union, the Muslim Students' Federation and the Students' Federation of India.

The Kunnamangalam sub-inspector and two constables, who were on patrol duty, were injured in stone-throwing. The Nallam sub-inspector was injured in stone throwing at Areekatt, near Meenchanda. An Indian Union Muslim League worker was injured. An autorickshaw was damaged.

Hartal supporters blocked vehicles at several places. A car was pelted with stones at Kuttikattor, near here.

Shops closed

Most shops and business establishments remained closed. Educational institutions did not function. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operated some services with police protection. The UDF workers took out a march in the city in the morning.

Guman Bahadur, a partially paralysed man who had come from Kathmandu, had to wait for more than an hour at the Kozhikode railway station before getting conveyance. Traffic police personnel tried to take him in a police jeep, but no vehicle was available. At last, an autorickshaw driver volunteered to transport him.
