KOLLAM: A hartal called by traders in the central business area of Kollam on Tuesday was total and peaceful. The hartal was observed in protest against the alleged manhandling of Kollam Merchants' Association president K. Ramabhadran by a Commercial Taxes Department (CTD) team during a raid at a jewellery. Mr. Ramabhadran was under treatment at a private hospital here. Shops at Chinnakada, the Main Road, Chamakada, Big Bazar, Lakshminada and the Paikada Road remained closed. The wholesale bazar areas along Paikada Road wore a deserted look. Earlier in the day, the traders met at the Quilon Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and held a protest meeting. The traders then took out a march through the Main Road. The demonstrators then assembled at the Press Club Maidan and held a meeting. It was inaugurated by Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi district president A. Abdul Rahim. Samithy general secretary G. Gopakumar, Quilon Merchants' Chamber of Commerce general secretary Netaji Rajendran, Kollam Retail Merchants' Association general secretary Pinjanikada Najib, City Merchants' Coordination Committee chairman M.K. Shyamaprasad Menon, Gold and Silver Merchants' Association district president Abdul Nazar and Kollam Young Merchants' Association general secretary M.M. Azad addressed the gathering.
