CHENNAI: Land for setting up 27 policecheckposts along coastal areas has been handed over to the construction agency, a senior police officer has said. This is in addition to the marine police stations under construction to strengthen coastal security. The design for erecting the checkposts has been approved. The government has also been requested to sanction personnel for manning the enforcement infrastructure, part of the Union Government's "Coastal Security Scheme". Each checkpost would be constructed at a cost of about Rs.6.5 lakh, the officer said. At present, priority would be given to constructing 12 marine police stations in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, each at a cost of Rs.24 lakh. Each police station would get two boats. At present, there were 60 checkposts in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Under the Government of India scheme, 40 more were proposed. Of this, land had been identified and handed over to the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation (TNPHC) for 27 checkposts. The sites included Ennore, Vengambakkam, Koonimedu, Vazhuthalaikaadu, Vallinokkam, Kadaladi, Devipattinam, Sippikulam, Kulasekarapattinam, Koothamkuzhi and Mahadanapuram. Land for the construction of the remaining 13 checkposts is under various stages of acquisition. A proposal was sent to the State Government for sanctioning 550 police personnel for the Coastal Security Group of the State Police. Another proposal is to purchase dinghies for patrolling shallow areas.
