MANGALORE: Members of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Karnataka State Aided Primary School Teachers' Association submitted a memorandum to Nagaraj Shetty, Minister for Fisheries, Endowment and district in charge, demanding extension of amenities provided in government primary schools to aided schools.

The memorandum was submitted at a meeting with the elected representatives, organised by the association on Tuesday.

Their demands include extension of free midday meal scheme and distribution of free uniforms to children studying in aided schools, and fee exemption for girl students. They demanded that the "Karnataka Darshan" programme be extended to aided schools. Schoolchildren are taken on a tour of the State under the programme.

They also demanded that aided school teachers be provided training and job security similar to government school teachers. Irrespective of the class strength, four teachers should be allowed in higher primary schools and two teachers in lower primary schools, they said. Rangaraj Shetty, president of the association, said the Government should realise that most students in aided schools were also from poor families. Mr. Nagaraj Shetty said he would forward the suggestions of the association to the Primary Education Minister. The Government would make attempts to address all the problems faced by aided schools, he said. Yogish Bhat, MLA, said that the policies regarding aided schools needed a rethink.
