Tsunami housing project beneficiaries being finalised

Staff Reporter

Covers 12,000 families on 3-km stretch along the Marina

CHENNAI : The Chennai Collectorate is in the process of finalising the list of beneficiaries from residents along the Marina, who will get new houses under the World Bank-funded Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project.

Last week, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board invited residents to see models of the multi-storeyed tenements. The project covers 12,000 families staying in the three-km stretch between Nochikuppam and Srinivasapuram.

Managing Director D. Vivekanandan said construction would start in July. "There is space only for building 7,320 tenements. The rest will be accommodated at Kannagi Nagar in Okkiam Toraipakkam." The Collectorate has finished identifying beneficiaries staying in dilapidated tenements in Foreshore Estate, Doomingkuppam, Nochikuppam, Nochinagar and Selvaraj Nagar. It is yet to cover Srinivasapuram, which has nearly 5,000 families. Once the list is published at taluk offices, the Corporation and the Collectorate, the public can give its suggestions and submit grievances.

The Board will be able to initiate an environmental impact and social assessment study only after the list is published. Tenders would be called once the study is over and grievances redressed, said Mr. Vivekanandan. "We will finish construction by October 2008."

Pre-fabricated slabs and modules will be used to speed up construction. The tenements will have electricity connections and piped water supply, apart from a toilet, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. According to officials, three storeys of tenements will be built on seven-foot stilts. The ground floor will thus act as a storage area as well as protect residents from flooding.
