Suburban trains to get additional coaches

One extra coach will be earmarked for women

CHENNAI : Twenty eight electrical-multiple unit (EMU)services on the Beach-Tambaram section will get three additional coaches per train from March 12, increasing carrying capacity by 900 passengers per train.

Of these 12-car services, six will operate during the rush hour: departing Tambaram at 8.32 a.m., 8.40 a.m., and 8.48 a.m. and departing Chennai Beach at 5.50 p.m., 6.05 p.m., and 6.32 p.m.

One extra coach of the 12-car rakes will be earmarked for women, bringing the total number of coaches for women on these trains to four.

According to a railway press release, two additional services, one leaving Tambaram at 7.50 am on the suburban line and one fast service leaving Tambaram at 8.55 a.m. on main line were introduced on Tuesday to cater to the rush hour demand. These additional services will provide a uniform headway of 8 minutes. Further, on Sundays, an additional 11 services have been provided on the Chennai Beach - Tambaram section with a frequency of 15 minutes from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Additional connectivity has been provided to Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu commuters by providing additional through service from Beach to Chengalpattu spread over the entire day.
