CHENNAI : Intricate paintings on bamboo by rural folk of Karnataka, khadi wear, tiny hand-made Ganeshas made of terracotta, jute and terracotta jewellery, brass items, Andhra pickles, dress material, furniture, incense sticks and various products made of `vettiver' are some of the products adorning stalls put up at the Crafts and Khadi Expo.

Inaugurated by Chennai Mayor M. Subramaniam here on Tuesday, the expo showcases a variety of interesting products made by rural artisans from all over the country, particularly from south India.

K.Lakshmikandan Bharathi, member of the State Planning Commission, spoke on the need to promote khadi among youth. He urged the Mayor to consider introducing khadi in Corporation schools. "Even if children and teachers wear khadi cloth once a month, they can experience the pride of using a swadesi product," he said.

The Mayor said he would consider making purchases from this sector for the Corporation's use to contribute to the growth of rural economy. Artisans from States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra, Jammu and Kashmir have put up stalls.

The exhibition-cum-sale, organised by the zonal-level Khadi and Village Industries Commission and the Rural Employment Generation Programme , is on till March 25 at Valluvar Kottam, Nungambakkam from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on all days.
