Plan to take it up with Government

TAMBARAM
: The Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram Municipality has decided to take up with the State Government the issue of hike in monthly water charges and also appealed to it not to implement the decision.
In a statement, S. Chandrasekar and C. Murugaiyan, president and secretary of the federation respectively, said that in April 2005, residents were shocked when they were asked to pay the monthly water charges of Rs. 50, while the earlier rate was only Rs. 25. They approached various Government agencies and also used provisions of the Right To Information Act to seek clarifications on the hiked charges. They recalled that the federation submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Local Administration in July 2006, requesting the Government to put the decision on hold.
Water charges
The monthly water charges in Tambaram and Alandur Municipalities were Rs. 65 and Rs. 50 respectively, the Federation pointed out. At the same time, the water charge in the Madurai Corporation was Rs. 418 a year and in the Chennai Corporation, Rs. 50 a month, which included sewerage charges.
The Pallavaram Municipality had so far not justified the increase, the statement said.
