CHENNAI: Nearly 50 per cent of litigations are frivolous. It is due to ill advice or lack of advice. Legal counselling centres will help to avoid unnecessary litigation, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court A.P.Shah said on Tuesday. The courts were overburdened with a huge number of pending cases, both civil and criminal. So, one had to look for alternative dispute resolution mechanism, and mediation was one such tool. The mediation centres in the State were functioning well, he said, inaugurating a free legal counselling centre on the Indian Officers Association premises here. S.J. Mukhopadhaya, executive chairman, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority, Chennai, said if proper legal advice was given at the appropriate time, the flow of cases to courts would come down. P. Sathasivam, executive chairman, Puducherry Legal Services Authority, spoke.
