When a physical education teacher of the Government Science College on Nrupathunga Road tried to shoo away students splashing colours on each other on Saturday, one of them thought the teacher should get into the spirit of things and promptly hurled an egg at his head. The teacher was not amused and the disciplinary committee handed a week's suspension to the thrower of the messy missile. The student and his father, a policeman, tendered an abject apology. You naturally wonder: Is indiscipline on the rise on our college campuses? A teacher laughed at the question. "It is nothing compared to the heady days of the '70s when every student owed allegiance to one politician or the other." He recalls that the very same college's students, armed with cricket bats, had gone so far as to murder then Principal Munigaviappa over a petty issue.
