HYDERABAD: Media's contribution in creating awareness about women's issues and rights cannot be ignored but it cannot be denied that media also continues to project stereotyped roles for women as conceived by the male dominated society, more so in electronic media, observed Telugu University Vice-Chancellor Avula Manjulatha here on Tuesday. Inaugurating the three-day UGC national seminar on `Women in/and media' organised by the Department of English, Osmania University College for Women, Koti, she said though the number of women in print and electronic media was increasing, they were however not yet in a position to play a decisive role. The telecast sometimes gave an impression that it was for "commodifying" rather than delving on the tragic and seriousness of the incident. Noted film artiste Jayasudha said women contributed significantly to society in various fields all over the world yet mainstream cinema still used women only to lend glamour quotient. Well-known freelance journalist and media watcher on gender and development issues, Ammu Joseph also spoke.
